FEEDFORWARD FEEDFORWARD Vol 3 WWW KEMIN COM 9 Henry Turlington Ph D Director of Quality Education and Training American Feed Industry Association Throughout my career in the food and feed industries there have been times of crisis But one thing Ive learned not just throughout my career but throughout my life is if measures are taken in advance potential situations hazards if you will can be identified preventing a crisis altogether The American Feed Industry Association following the impact of the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus outbreak in the swine industry set out to assist the industry in implementing proactive not reactive biosecurity measures AFIA updated its biosecurity guidance document to address specific information and controls needed for the feed industry to reduce or halt the spread of viruses or pathogens such as PEDV The document is now titled Developing Biosecurity Practices for Feed Ingredient Manufacturing I cannot urge each facility location or business enough Develop a biosecurity plan based on the potential hazards and risks of occurrence within its processes The AFIA guidance document is a great tool focusing on the development of biosecurity practices for feed and ingredient manufacturers to control biological hazards that may contribute to the spread of animal diseases but I also want to provide four mustcomplete steps to building a biosecurity plan 4 steps to building a biosecurity plan How implementing a risk assessment process can reduce or halt the spread of pathogens
